Brassland is built on community. So it was heartening when our most self-sufficient group Buke and Gase joined forces with the keen collaborators in Sล Percussion to create a genre-defying LP.

On the surface Sล Percussion and Buke and Gase are an unlikely pairing. Sล Percussion work in a classical context. They are in-residence at Princeton University and founded the percussion program at Bard's Conservatory of Music. A piece by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw which they recorded won a Grammy in 2022. By contrast, Buke & Gase are stridently DIY and their long-standing partnership has been hermetically sealed. They produce their own albums and are skeptical about the institutions and structures classical groups depend on.

Already familiar with one another via The National, the creation of 'A Record Of' was instigated by a commission from the Ecstatic Music Series. Happily it opened the groups to a new and bespoke creative process. The six musicians wrote together in Aron Sanchez's 300-year-old house in upstate NY and debuted the material during a 2014 concert at NYC's Merkin Hall.

It took a half-decade for recordings to appear. Highly collaborative sessions at a rural Vermont studio gave way to the Aron(e)s slow process of twisting the LP into its final shape through radical post-production.

A first single โ€œDiazepamโ€ hinted at a gentle, blended style. Arone Dyer's processed vocals float over atmospheric vibraphones. Subsequent singles exploded those expectations with shapeshifting krautrock, math rock and latin rhythms. Released at the height of Covid, Arone noted a mental health theme threaded through the album's lyrics: "It can be read as a response to this very stressful year (or 4), or a reminder to hug yourself."
