This Is The Kit: Bashed Out — vinyl LP + compact disc
$13.99 - $19.99

‘Bashed Out’ transformed a small yet beloved indie folk-rock group on the British scene into something bigger. In part, this was thanks to the watchful eyes (and ears) of producer Aaron Dessner and musical contributions from our extended creative family. Stereogum predicted it would become TITK’s “breakout” LP. And it was…

We began working with This Is The Kit in 2012, after a second label had released their second LP 'Wriggle Out the Restless' and then gone out of business. We reissued it and slowly began reintroducing them and firming up their team.

Aaron Dessner made 'Bashed Out' in fits and starts between commitments to The National, completing the LP in 2014. The recording was tracked by TITK core band—Rozi Plain, Jesse Vernon, Jamie Whitby-Coles—and enhanced with playing from a who’s who of American indie, including Bryce Dessner, Thomas “Doveman” Bartlett, Matt Barrick (The Walkmen, Muzz) and Ben Lanz (Beirut, The National).

In contrast to other albums in TITK's discography, the result is less rhythmic and toe-tapping, and more of a slow-rumble. It's indie rock of a hangover-friendly, stoner variety—folk in a slow, magical groove. The sound is honest, human, and humane—a particularly effective setting for frontperson Kate Stables, whose voice and writing hearken back to classic singer-songwriters of the 70s. In many ways, this LP created a template Aaron would use on later, more mainstream productions for an ever more glittering list of artists including the likes of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.

In TITK’s case, a series of fortunate events followed the album's release— live dates with Sharon Van Etten, Jose Gonzalez, Alexi Murdoch, and The National; a string of playlisted radio singles and even a television special for various BBC media outlets; and, finally, a series of prominent placements in TV shows including Grace & Frankie and, crucially, the title track in Netflix's hit Sex Education.
