Buke and Gase: Scholars โ€”ย vinyl LP + compact disc
$12.99 - $19.99

Buke and Gase put out this LP after a six-year hiatus during which they released little new music. 'Scholars' began as a potential new moniker for the group. It evolved into Scholars Allianceโ€”a Bandcamp-driven membership community that continues to support advances in their creativity.

'General Dome'โ€”the 2013 album by the duo of Aron Sanchez and Aron Dyerโ€”was lauded by NPR Music, The Guardian, and the influential vlogger Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop. The buzz led them to tour North American and Europe againโ€”and play their first gigs in Asia and Australia.

They became an established cult favorite much admired by fellow musicians. They collaborated with or acted as hand-picked support for a who's who of icons: Lou Reed & Laurie Anderson, Shellac, Battles, Reggie Watts, Swans, Deerhoof, Owen Pallett, and Mike Pattonโ€™s metal supergroup Tomahawk.

And then, years of silence...

The Aron(e)s embarked on a major refinement and modernization of their instrumental creations. They largely retired their namesake buke (bass ukulele) and gass (guitar-bass). The duo developed Arx, a device that revolutionized their performance by allowing them to trigger percussive sounds, change effects on their instruments, and control vocal harmonies with the punch of an arcade button.

After years of ecstatic improvisation, then laborious editing and post-production, they emerged with the more concise, electronic, and emotional sound of 'Scholars.' Yes, it is experimental musicโ€”but catchy as hell and with a pop heart. Pitchfork said it suggests "a robotic chamber orchestra, soldered together by someone shielded in a helmet emblazoned with a Bananarama sticker, Hot 97 blaring from a nearby boombox... The production here snaps with the clarity and force of stadium-sized headbangers while maintaining the intimacy of...earlier work."

In subsequent years the duo have been prolific, regularly releasing new collaborations and solo explorations.
